About 13 minutes (10 miles) from our Elk River office
Zimmerman grew up along the Great Northern Railroad line that ran through Sherburne County from 1886 to 1976 — incorporated as the Village of Lake Fremont in 1910 and renamed in 1967 for Moses Zimmerman, the local farmer who pushed to bring the railway through.
The commute is the single biggest thing we hear about from Zimmerman. Sherburne County sits between two growth centres, the Twin Cities and St. Cloud, and most Zimmerman workers drive themselves to one or the other. A body held in a car seat for half an hour twice a day tends to adapt in the wrong direction: hip flexors shorten, the mid-back rounds, and the lumbar discs sit under steady compression. That pattern is behind much of the back pain and sciatica we assess in commuters, whether they set out from Woods at Lake Fremont, Pioneer Ponds or the newer Woodland Meadows North side of town. Where examination points toward disc involvement, spinal decompression is one option Dr. Schomaker may discuss with you. Where the problem is guarding and restricted tissue, hands-on soft-tissue work such as trigger point therapy often makes more sense.
Weekends bring an entirely different set of complaints. Lake Fremont is shallow and warm enough to fish hard all season, and repetitive casting is unkind to a shoulder that already spends the week at a keyboard or a steering wheel. West of the city, the horse trails through Sand Dunes State Forest and the Blue Hill Trail loops at Sherburne National Wildlife Refuge put riders and hikers on uneven ground for hours at a stretch. Then winter arrives, those same corridors fill with snowmobiles, and every rural driveway in the county needs clearing. Twisting shovel loads and hard trail landings are two of the most reliable sources of neck pain and shoulder complaints we see between December and March.
Zimmerman is a young city, and that matters here. With a median age near 32, several years below the state figure, a large share of the town is either raising kids or being one. Families in the Zimmerman Elementary, Westwood Elementary and Zimmerman Middle/High attendance areas are a short run down the highway from us, and our approach to pediatric care is built around a growing body. Our office is at 19022 Freeport St, Suite D in Elk River, just off US-169 near School Street NW. We open at 8:00am on weekdays, run afternoon hours until 6:00pm Monday through Thursday, and see Saturday patients by appointment. Call (763) 253-2000 and we will find a slot that survives contact with your commute.
Proudly serving: Woods at Lake Fremont, Forest Oaks, Pioneer Ponds, Woodland Meadows North.
Local, trusted care
Why Zimmerman chooses Schomaker Chiropractic Clinic
Zimmerman has kept growing as Sherburne County fills in, and the thing that fuels that growth is also the thing that wears people down: the drive. Census figures put the average commute out of Zimmerman at about 34 minutes, and most workers make that trip alone behind the wheel, either south on US-169 toward the Twin Cities or west toward St. Cloud. Thirty-four minutes each way is a long time in one fixed position, and it shows up in predictable places. A low back that locks up at the first step out of the truck. A hip that aches on the clutch side. A tightening band across the shoulders from holding the wheel through a Highway 10 merge. Because our office sits on that same corridor, care does not have to become its own errand. You are already pointed at Elk River, so the appointment simply happens on the way.
Off the clock, Zimmerman is a lake-and-trail town with a notably young population. The median age is about 32, several years below the figure for Minnesota as a whole. That shapes what walks through our door. Lake Fremont on the east edge of the city is shallow, about 493 acres, and busy from ice-out through fall with anglers launching from the city-run public access. Grams Regional Park carries about two miles of trail and boardwalk through oak forest and tamarack bog. Southwest of town, Sand Dunes State Forest holds 17 miles of horse trail plus the Sand Dunes Horse Camp, and those same corridors turn into snowmobile and ski routes once the snow sets in. Riding, sledding, clearing a long rural driveway and a Friday night with the Zimmerman Thunder all load the spine in different ways, so we examine the person in front of us rather than working from a template.
What we help with
Common reasons Zimmerman patients come in
Low back pain from long commutes
Thirty-plus minutes each way on US-169 keeps the lumbar spine in one loaded position, which is why low back stiffness is often at its worst right after the drive home.
Learn more →Sciatica and leg symptoms
Seated driving crowds the structures around the sciatic nerve. Burning or numbness running from the buttock into the calf is a common complaint from the daily metro run.
Learn more →Hip and pelvic pain from riding
Hours in the saddle on the Sand Dunes horse trails load the hips and sacroiliac joints asymmetrically, and riders often notice it long after the trailer is unhitched.
Learn more →Whiplash from crashes and sled jolts
Winter conditions on US-169 and County Road 4, plus hard landings on packed snowmobile trail, are two common ways a neck gets jolted around Zimmerman.
Learn more →Shoulder and rotator cuff strain
Repetitive casting on Lake Fremont and a season of shovelling a rural drive both ask a lot of the shoulder. Overhead reaching is usually the first motion to complain.
Learn more →Sprains and strains in young athletes
Zimmerman is a young city with a full ISD 728 sports calendar, and a single sport played year round asks a lot of a frame that is still growing.
